The installation of a wooden floor on an underfloor heating system is not an easy task and requires a lot of experience both from the heating installer and the parquet layer. Wood, as a natural material, reacts to changing environmental conditions, such as humidity and temperature, while underfloor heating significantly increases the fluctuation of these factors. Therefore, this type of heating must be designed with the natural properties of a wooden floor in mind, to ensure very even and non-rapid heat dissipation over the entire surface of the floor. 

Two necessary features are required from floorboards: 

  • Low thermal resistance, affecting the efficiency of heat transferring in the entire installation.

  • High dimensional stability subsequently reduces the risk of permanent deformation.

When choosing a natural wooden floor, we are faced with the question of whether to choose a layered or solid wood board. Layered floors have only one thin layer, the so-called “top wood”, which significantly reduces or even prevents ease in maintenance. On the other hand, solid boards are made entirely of a single species of wood, which makes them the perfect solution for forthcoming generations. They can be sanded many times and the surface regains its original glow after each renovation. But which type of board is more suitable for underfloor heating?

Floorboards Stability

Experts in the industry often express their opinion that solid boards on underfloor heating will cause the distortion of the wood sooner or later. Thermal Conductivity

The second aspect of using solid wood boards for underfloor heating is their thermal conductivity. The value of the heat conductivity coefficient for wood depends primarily on its density. Solid boards are made entirely out of one type of wood, which is usually oak or ash, which is a species that possesses high density and heat conductivity. In the case of layered boards, low-density wood (birch or conifers) is usually used under the thin surface layer, i.e. with lower thermal conductivity.
